Tips for Hair Care
Tips for easy care of your hair.
Depending on the type of hair you have will be the deciding factor as to which kind of products will be best for you.
Coarse Hair
Coarse hair is harder to manage. It can be stiff and have a mind of its own. If it is straight it will usually hang straight down from your head, with no lift at all if it is long. If it's short it can tend to stick out in all the wrong places. If you have coarse hair and want it to have some wave, you will need a strong perm to get it to take. If it's white, even more so. If you have always had this type of hair and now it is going white, it will be even more resistant to curling.
The good news is that you can use just about any type of product. You have very strong hair. There are a lot of different products out there and luckily for you, you can use any of then without worrying about damaging your hair.
Coarse, Curly Hair
Now we have this type of hair. This is what I have. It can be a blessing or a curse. I know how difficult it can be to handle. What worked for me is finding a cut the makes it easy. I tend to wear it long and with lots of layers. This keeps it from getting bushy. I also do not touch it after it is dry. If I do, it gets about 3 feet wide. Not a pretty look. I recommend washing this type of hair every other day, using a good conditioner and towel drying. Put a mousse or gel through out and comb or pick it out so as to distribute product evenly. Allow to air dry. While drying, scrunch with your hands. Do not brush or pick after it dries. This will tend to make it frizzy and bushy. If you decide that you don't like the feel of gel or mousse, you can try a curling cream. Some of my clients have tried that and love it because the hair stays soft. Gel or mousse tend to make the hair stiff, especially if you are using too much.
Medium Hair
By medium I mean, you have hair that is not coarse, not fine. You have hair right in between. It is what is considered to be perfect in its texture and how much you have. Each hair is of medium size and you have a full head of it. This is perfect hair. This type of hair is great to work with. You can have perms or colors and it takes beautifully. You can wear it straight and that looks great as well. You are very lucky if you have this type of hair. There is one thing you should be a bit careful with. You should invest in salon quality products. This will keep it healthy and shiny. If you chemically alter it, be doubly sure to do this. This type of hair does not do so well with two chemical processes. You should think twice about doing a perm and a color together. You will have dry hair and it will lose its shine. Try to stick with one or the other. Be sure to use salon quality products to keep your chemically altered hair in great condition. This type of hair also does well with trims every 4 to 6 weeks. This keeps the ends healthy and smooth.
Fine Straight Hair
This can be very difficult hair. It does not take a perm well. It can be hard to curl, but at the same time when it does curl, it can suddenly frizz. There is a very fine line between getting it to curl and having it frizz. Sometimes it just does not want to curl at all. This can be challenging, but do-able. If you have this type of hair, check with your salon to find out who is most qualified to perm this type of hair. You do not want to have the new person doing your hair. Get someone with lots of experience. After you have a perm or color, be sure to invest in good quality, salon products so you can maintain the beauty of your hair after you leave the salon.
Fine Curly Hair
This type of hair can have the frizzes quite easily. You should have a trim frequently, like every 5 weeks. You will get split ends easily and this will help. You will tend to have dry hair and should invest in salon quality products. I would recommend a moisturizing shampoo and a detangling cream rinse. You do need to be careful when purchasing products that are called detanglers. Actually, before you buy one, contact me for my recommendation. There are some out there that really cause a lot of damage and I don't want to see you using them. I will give you a way to contact me at the bottom of this page. For your final step in styling your hair, try a leave in curling cream to define your curly without being stiff or weighing your hair down.
